Standard 2 - Know the content and how to teach it
2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area
Lesson plans are a great way to outline certain strategies of teaching, whether it be corrective, supportive or preventative. The lesson plan below shows an effective way of teaching an introduction to composing and arranging using the complicated musical software called Sibelius. Considering that in this scenario students had zero prior knowledge on how to use Sibelius, this is a great way to introduce them to the complicated software. And also because my own knowledge of Sibelius is quite extensive, I can teach them the tips and tricks that will make using it so much easier. As can be seen on the lesson plan, there is a section where the students are in small groups working together for 15-20 minutes. This is the period of time where I would walk around and ensure that they are all on task and make sure they all understand what is going on.

2.2 Content selection and organisation
It is extremely important to be organised for every lesson and to choose material that promotes and supports effective learning. This relates quite closely to standard one in the sense that if you know your students well and understand how they learn, content selection should be easy and will make teaching a group of students that has varied abilities and interests much less complicated. With the year 10 band (which is made up of 15-16 year old students), I decided to choose a popular modern song and arrange it for their set of band instruments. The song is called Gold by Guy Sebastian, and it challenges them musically whilst still ensuring they are having a great time whilst playing.

2.6 Information and Communication Technology
As previously mentioned, my knowledge of the Sibelius software is reasonably extensive, and I know most of the shortcuts and handy tips that make using Sibelius a breeze. Considering this, it would be wise to implement this into the lessons and start the students learning how to use such a complicated program (which will effectively make their musical lives much easier). ICT is a great way to get students learning about concepts that they maybe would not usually pay any attention to. Younger people are becoming more and more comfortable with technology, and as it progress, so does teaching strategies. When I was teaching Sibelius and composing in one of my year 10 classes, I decided to create a 'Sibelius Cheat Sheet' for the students which outlined the handy shortcuts that can be used to do certain things. This document is attached below. Each student was given a copy whilst working on their composition, and it helped eliminate time wasting and errors.
